Who Are We?

Updated: Jul 22, 2022

SafeHouse of Shelby County Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that serves to empower survivors of domestic and sexual violence through support and advocacy and to educate the community to prevent future abuse. In other words we serve men, women, and children who are fleeing abuse and violence. Whether they have been assaulted once by a stranger, are seeking asylum from an chronic abusive partner, or are wanting an understanding of what sexual and domestic violence is we are your go to people for Shelby, Clay, Coosa, and Chilton counties.

We were established in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens who saw a need. The original home was donated by Sherman Holland and still stands in an area located behind Wal-Mart in Pelham, AL. Our staff has responded to thousands of crisis calls and has provided safe haven for over 5,000 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. SafeHouse provides all services free of charge and our shelter is operational 24/7.

We say all the time that we want to "work ourselves out of a job" because although most of our services are catered to individuals who have already experienced abuse, are goal is to prevent it from ever happening in the first place. And that's where I come in! I am the Prevention, Intervention, and Education Coordinator here at SafeHouse, but you can just refer to me as Emma. I manage and organize all things outreach such as educational workshops, debriefing tables, social media, and this blogpost.

Aside from myself we have other individuals who work in a confidential Emergency Shelter, Sexual Assault (SA) and Domestic Violence (DV) counseling, Case Management, Forensic Exams, Court Advocacy, Legal Assistance, 24/7 Crisis Line and many more!

If you or anyone you know is experiencing or has experienced sexual or domestic violence of any kind please call our number.

We believe you and we are here to help you!
